A Note About Clothing
If you’re visiting the Arctic in autumn or winter, it’s important to dress properly for the cold. Packing the right clothes can make the difference between a magical experience and a freezing one!
Layering is key — and wool is your best friend.
Here’s what we recommend:
Merino wool underwear (never cotton – it gets cold when wet)
Two pairs of wool socks — one thin, one thick
A warm fleece or wool sweater
Windproof and waterproof winter jacket and trousers
A hat and a scarf
Wool finger gloves with insulated mittens over the top (mittens are much warmer than gloves!)
Winter boots with thick soles
Important tip: Never wear jeans or cotton close to your skin — they don’t insulate well and stay wet if they get damp.
STAY WARM!
Dress for the cold, but don’t forget to keep moving — it’s the best way to stay warm. Wiggle your fingers and toes, go for a walk, or just dance a little in the snow!
If you're traveling with young children, make sure they stay warm at all times — they can get cold faster than adults.
What You Need for winteractivities like Snowshoehike and Ice Fishing Tours
When you join me on a snowshoe or ice fishing adventure, being prepared will make your experience truly unforgettable. The Arctic can be breathtaking — but also chilly — so dressing smart is key to staying comfortable and enjoying every moment.
Here’s what we recommend you bring:
In your backpack:
An extra fleece or warm sweater, perfect for cozy breaks by the fire
Extra socks and gloves, because it’s always good to have a backup
A water bottle to stay hydrated
Some fruit or snacks to keep your energy up
And, of course, a camera to capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife
On your body:
Wool long underwear — your best friend for warmth
A wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers to keep you dry
A fleece or warm sweater for insulation
Gloves — mittens are best to keep your fingers toasty
Gaiters to protect your lower legs from snow
A scarf, cap or hat to keep the chill out
And sunglasses — the snow reflects a lot of light, so protect your eyes
Norway’s climate is a fascinating mix that surprises many visitors. From the mild coastal areas to the crisp, cold polar regions, the weather changes with the landscape — and sometimes quite quickly! Whether you’re traveling from the southern fjords to the Arctic north, or from the coast to the mountains, you’ll experience a wide range of conditions.
Winter here lasts from mid-October to April, but it doesn’t look the same everywhere. In some places, deep snow and ice create a true winter wonderland, while others might enjoy milder, more temperate days. This diversity means it’s tricky to give one-size-fits-all advice — but with the right clothes and gear, you’ll be ready for anything.
Tips for Layering and Staying Warm
Layering is the secret to staying comfortable in cold weather. Start with a snug wool base layer that keeps moisture away from your skin. Add a warm fleece or sweater for insulation. Your outer layer — a wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers — protects you from wind, snow, and rain.
Keep your hands warm by wearing wool gloves underneath mittens, which trap heat better. Don’t forget your head and neck — a good hat and scarf can make a big difference in keeping the cold out.
Most importantly, keep moving! When you’re active, your body generates heat. So whether you’re hiking on snowshoes or waiting patiently while ice fishing, wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch, and stay engaged. If you start feeling cold, a quick walk or a little dance will warm you right up.
